The data summary

• covid-data3.pdf This file summarizes country-level international data and both state and county data for the US. It is meant to be updated daily, but sometimes data errors and pipeline errors occur. Please be aware that I am simply processing the underlying data and not fixing occasional data errors, some of which are obvious.¹ (These usually are resolved by the providers within a few days.) For additional sources you can explore the “other data sources” links below.

Data I use

I use the following datasets:

• Country-level data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control

• US county-level data from usafacts.org.

  • Confirmed cases: https://static.usafacts.org/public/data/covid-19/covid_confirmed_usafacts.csv
  • Deaths: https://static.usafacts.org/public/data/covid-19/covid_deaths_usafacts.csv

• US county-level population and density data from the Bureau of the Census (obtained using the tidycensus R package)

  • us_county_pop.csv
  • us_state_pop.csv

Other data sources

• New York Times COVID page; github site

• Atlantic Monthly Covid tracking project; github site

• John Hopkins dashboard; github site

• Population data from the United Nations data portal, specifically the population file, which contains the percentage of the population over age 59.

1. For example, on November 21, the confirmed data from usafacts transposed the totals for Jefferson Parish and Jefferson Davis Parish, which has less than 1/10 the population. State totals remained accurate.↩︎
